Welcome!

Welcome! - 2007-08-06

Welcome to the Third Base Brewery. We are the First and Only brewery since Prohibition in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. We've been hand-crafting some of the best beer around since we opened (as Cedar Brewing) in 1996. Well, times (and owners) may change, but two things remain the same always - our love of beer, and our comitment to you to produce and serve the best beer we can. From our advanced 8.5 Barrel brewing system and our use of quality ingredients to our talented brewer and kitchen crew, from our abundant flat screen TV's and NTN Trivia and Poker to our dedicated serving staff and bar crew, Third Base Brewery is The Place To Be in Cedar Rapids!

Now On Tap - Too Many Cooks Saison! - 2009-05-29 11:10:48

Too Many Cooks Saison - Third Base Brewery and Beer Nuts (our local Home Brew Club) participated in the American Homebrewers Association's Big Brew, and this year's recipe is a Saison Du Mont (see the recipe here). The beer, a Saison Du Mont, is a refreshing pale ale traditionally brewed seasonally in farmhouses in Wallonia, the French-speaking region of Belgium, to refresh farm workers during harvest season. Our Saison is made with barley malt, oats, wheat, honey, and several hops, along with orange peel, coriander, and grains of paradise, and is fermented with a traditional Belgian ale yeast.
Congratulations to Derek Doan for winning our Name That Brew contest! Derek is a member of our exclusive (ask your server) Mug Club, so he wins two Growlers of fresh craft brew! We'd like to say thanks to all who entered! We saw some interesting and rather, er...well, let's just leave it at interesting entries. (There's a special place in our hearts for entries likeGiner Shiner, FroggyStyle, Farmer's Daughter and How Did I Get This Welt On My Head?!?!. We can't wait to see what you come up with next time!)

Now On Tap - Slappy's Smoked Porter! - 2009-05-27 14:43:21

Slappy's Smoked Porter - Named for Larry "Pappy" Papkin and Matt "Sleepy" Franklin, who created the recipe...(That's where we got "Slappy" from)...or something like that. Anyway, this beer is a little different from the classic German Rauchbier (smoke beer). A bit darker and a tad more bitter, this American Smoked Porter also has more body and a smoothness that makes it an easy-to-drink brew. The aroma is a blend of malt and smokiness, which can seem bacon-like and woody. The flavor will follow the aroma profile (mostly) with the hint of astringent dryness that Black Patent malt brings to the party. Think of this beer as a dry stout with the addition of bacon-like smokiness. And just when you thought it couldn't get any better, we're serving this out of our Nitrogen tap!

What's On Deck - Upcoming Brews - 2009-05-05 11:45:00

Slappy's Smoked Porter, Name That Saison Du Mont, Beggar Jon's Hefeweisen...In That Order!
That skinny kid with the sexy rubber boots (no, not Suede (and not *those* kind of boots, either...now get your head out of the gutter!), we're talking about the skinny kid we keep behind the glass - Travis, our Brewmaster) has some tasty treats forthcoming, and we thought you should know.

  • Begger Jon's Hefeweisen - A classic German summertime treat, this unfiltered wheat beer is brewed with a specific strain of yeast which gives this Bavarian brew its characteristic banana/clove aroma and flavor. Very refreshing on a hot summer day! Prosit!

Now On Tap - Tilted Kilt! - 2009-02-12 11:47:52

OK, lets start with the name. We've been brewing our Spring seasonal, Tilted Kilt, in this brewery for more than a decade. It's one of our most-requested seasonals, and we brew it to celebrate Spring and St. Pattys Day and the possibility that the feckin' snow will finally be gone soon. So if anyone cries about the similarity between the beer's name and the new 'bar' down the road, that's just fine. After all, we know our beer's so good they decided to name their place after it!

Now, on to the beer itself. Tilted Kilt is a deep ruby red Irish ale. Brewed with Maris Otter, caramel, and roasted barleys, it has a malty, biscuity, flavor and a smooth caramel finish. There is a minimal hoppiness to this one. The use of these British malts, British Fuggle hops, and Irish Ale yeast make this beer as authentic as we can brew it this side of the pond.

Sláinte Mhath!
