Welcome! - 2007-08-06

Welcome to the Third Base Brewery. We are the First and Only brewery since Prohibition in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. We've been hand-crafting some of the best beer around since we opened (as Cedar Brewing) in 1996. Well, times (and owners) may change, but two things remain the same always - our love of beer, and our comitment to you to produce and serve the best beer we can. From our advanced 8.5 Barrel brewing system and our use of quality ingredients to our talented brewer and kitchen crew, from our abundant flat screen TV's and NTN Trivia and Poker to our dedicated serving staff and bar crew, Third Base Brewery is The Place To Be in Cedar Rapids!

Now On Tap - Oktoberfest! - 2008-09-22 11:20:24

Most beer drinkers know Oktoberfest as a German beer festival held in late September to mid-October each year. This celebration, started as a wedding reception for Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in 1810, has grown to become the largest beer fest in the world, serving 69,500 barrels (17,236,000 pints!) of beer to some 6.9 million visitors over the span of 18 days.
The term “Oktoberfest” has evolved to describe the special beers brewed for the celebration. This style of beer is also referred to as Märzenbier.
Travis brewed our own special version of this celebrated brew with German Pilsner, Vienna, and Munich malts, and is complimented with just the right amount of German noble hops. Märzenbier is full-bodied, rich, toasty, typically dark copper in color with a medium alcohol content, and a damned tasty brew as the seasons and the leaves turn. Ask your bartender or server for one today!

Trav Takes Our Beer to the Festival of Iowa Beers - 2008-08-25 11:41:54

Travis, that skinny kid you see in the glass cage behind the bar sometimes, is taking some of our stuff to the Festival of Iowa Beers on Sunday, August 31 In Amana, Iowa. You want a good time on a Sunday? Be there!

(Rumor has it beer chef Joe Stutler of Joe's Kitchen and Beer University fame will be featuring a couple of our beers in his cooking demo at 3 pm!)

C.R.I.P.A. Tapped Out - 2008-07-22

Sad news for you hop-heads…the C.R.I.P.A is no more. You drank it all. Oh well. Something new will come along and grab your attention soon. Until then, there's always yer old standby beerme call, Aces. Go ahead, you know you want to.

Summer Beers are Here - 2008-06-30

Travis, not having anything better to do (and liking the idea of a continued pay check), has returned a couple of the favorite summer seasonals to the menu.

New Brews, Just for You:

  • Beggar Jon's Hefeweizen This classic summertime treat from Bavaria (southern Germany) is brewed with a special strain of yeast that gives it a characteristic banana and clove aroma and flavor. The beer is named after Jon Brown, one our customers who does nothing but whine and moan when hefe season is over. It's our most popular seasonal, so we try to keep it around for the summer

  • C.R.I.P.A. This hop-head's delight was created to celebrate our contracting of enough hops to survive the world-wide hop shortage. If you don't love this stuff, you ain't a real beer drinker and should probabally go back to that yellowish water in a brown bottle.

Last Saturday Special - 2008-01-30 21:16:23

No...not last Saturday last Saturday, like last weekend…the last Saturday of the month…that last Saturday. Anyway, on the last Saturday of the month you get a 1/2 priced growler with purchase of a 25 oz mug of Beer. Sweet, huh? You bet. See this and more specials on our …(wait for it)Specials page. Betcha didn't see that one comin'.

New Space, New Beers, New Reasons to Celebrate! - 2008-03-17

You might have noticed the new hole in the west wall where booth 403 used to be. Welcome to the new Play Room! What's that? Why, nothing less than a Pool table, dart board, Silver Strike bowling, a bunch of TV's, tables and chairs...and enough room to spread out, finally!
(be sure to tip your servers well over there...it's quite a trek to the bar now...and the way they tell it the kitchen is somewhere in Marion!)

New Brews, Just for You:

  • Please Don't Look Up Frenchy's Tilted Kilt Irish Ale (no, it ain't green...ain't supposed to be...you only add food coloring to that macro-swill and only when you ain't got real Blarney-Stones)

  • Slappy's Smoked Porter (Dark, smoky, smooth, sexy…yeah, all that…in a glass)

  • Hazelnut Coffee Stout Breakfast Beer (also good for lunch, supper, snack time, or try it in a float!)

Beer U Class Starting 03/06

Not sure if you can tell a Pilsner from a Porter or a Steam from a Stout? Our friends at Beer University have a class starting on March 6, 2008. In the class, you'll learn more about the drink you love! In this class, you'll explore the vast and diverse world of beer… the oldest and still most popular adult beverage on the planet. Topics will be discussed such as the brewing process, styles and types of beer, food pairings and cooking with beer, cultural and social aspects, etc. You'll sample several beers and learn there's more to a good beer than a good logo and marketing team. Must be 21+.
Our Brewmaster, Travis, has been known to drop in on these classes from time to time…be sure to keep an eye out for him. Third Base Brewery is the recommended study center for all Beer University classes and programs.
